Friday Five: Foods I Eat After Long Runs

Hello and happy Friday! This week and for most weeks coming, I’m joining the Friday Five Link Up hosted by DC area bloggers Eat Pray Run DC, Mar on the Run and You Signed Up For What?!.  I love this link-up because I’m always looking for new ideas of posts to write about, it kind of reminds me of the writing prompts back in middle/high school. This week’s theme is “Five Favorite Fall Foods”.

Well to be honest, I don’t eat much different stuff in the fall.  But fall means marathons, and marathons mean training, so I’d like to share the five things I like to stuff my face with after long runs.  Let’s face it….all those miles make you hungry! Now, I usually eat a pretty good recovery meal right after my run, but that evening, it’s game on.  We are fortunate to live in a city with many amazing food options, so I’m never short on supply of food!

Here are some of my favorites:

Burgers.  Hands down, the number one thing I want after a long run.  The bigger, saltier, and juicier the better. One of my favorite places to go in Atlanta for said burger is The Vortex.  There are two locations and their menu has lots of burgers with crazy toppings.  My favorite burger is the Yokahama Mama: cheese, teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple…and I add bacon.  The tots on the side are phenomenal, too!  This is also my favorite thing after a race.  I need to do some research for burgers in Richmond.

Hibachi.  Who doesn’t love dinner & a show?! I love the fried rice and the fact that I can completely gouge myself and STILL have a box to take home.  We have a few different places we go here, but honestly they’re all about the same to me.

Pizza.  If I’m feeling lazy, Papa John’s delivered to the house with extra garlic sauce.  I recently went to a place in Atlanta that is pretty well known, Anticos…and it was the best pizza I’ve ever had in my entire life.  They are a true authentic Italian place, and I can’t even describe to you how amazing this pizza was.  I just love pizza….yum.

Breakfast scrambler & pancakes & bacon. Occasionally I will get delicious breakfast food right after my run from a restaurant here called Egg Harbor Café.  My go-to item on the menu is their egg scrambler with cherry tomatoes, chicken sausage, basil, and goat cheese.  Then I make it a combo so I get blueberry pancakes and fruit.  And I add cherrywood smoked bacon on the side.  And THEN I wash it all down with fresh squeezed strawberry orange juice.  Then I take a nap.

Steak.  Specifically, filet or prime rib.  I’m an expensive date.  Brian and I like to go to Stoney River Steakhouse – better than some of your other chain steakhouses, but not as pricey as some high end ones.  They have a great atmosphere and the service is phenomenal….and the rolls they serve are OUTSTANDING!
