NYC Marathon Training Weeks 4 and 5


Do you ever feel like the forces of the universe are working against you and your training? That’s how the past 2 weeks have been. I’ve had so much get thrown at me, influding:

– incredibly long and high stress workdays (12-14 hours)

– torrential downpours and thunderstorms

– nauseous stomach/vomiting on my long run

– forgetting my workout clothes when travelling out of town

I’ve still managed to get in many workouts, but I’ve altered or missed more than I would have liked over the past two weeks. I’m trying hard to set boundaries with work and not beat myself up. I don’t have time goals for NYC, but when you are marathon training every missed workout seems critical.

The past two weekends have been full of visits! Two weekends ago I went to see my friend Christina in Charlotte.  Skipper and I took a road trip and we got to see Christina’s new puppy, Penny! Skipper was not amused that the attention (and his toy) was stolen from him:

In exciting work news, I got selected for a major company project,  This is a 3 year gig that is the #1 priority for the company, so it’s a huge deal and I’m sooooo excited to go on the project. However, that means the next 30 days will be spent transitioning out of my current role. My new job will require me to be in the office daily, so no more working from home a few days a week.  With this shift in work, things may be quiet around here, and I’ll be figuring out again how I make training work in my new routine.

I’m looking for any and all tips or advice on how you keep up with training when the rest of your life gets crazy!


I haven’t had a chance to do much with fundraising,  but I did kick off my major event with my hair dresser! I’ve raised over $1,000 with the fundraiser, bringing my total raised to over $10,000!!

I will be cutting my hair in 2 weeks and I CAN’T WAIT!

  1. I am loving Skipper’s side eye in the second photo, LOL!
    Congrats on your new work project – that is super exciting! It might take a little while but I’m sure you’ll figure out a new workout routine that works for you.
    Do you get an hour for lunch? If so, you might be able to fit in a run or quick strength training workout. I do that about once a week.

  2. Congratulations on the new role at work Jess! That’s awesome! Like Kimberly suggests, maybe there is a way to squeeze something in over lunch, or make the commute early, work out near the office and then get ready for work? I’ve done that before, skip the bad traffic. Maybe there’s a barre studio or a running path near your office?

    Skipper is so jealous, too cute 🙂 Christina’s puppy is very adorable.
